Position Purpose:
This position is a career ladder position for technical staff within the Department of Pharmacy. It is intended to recognize the associates development, experience and service to the department, hospital and co-workers. The primary differences between a pharmacy technician II and a pharmacy technician III are; 1) completion of department cost savings or process improvement project, 2) assume the role of a lead for one of the pharmacy competency areas to other staff and 3) the length of service to the department/organization. Adheres to MercyOne performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.
Tech will be using patient history, community pharmacy profile and EPIC or Cerner to determine the correct medication history for the admitted patient. Will require several years of experience and willingness to learn and great patient communication skills.
What you will Do:
Responsible for unit dose medication distribution and control.
Central operations
Demonstrates competence with automated dispensing units
Assists pharmacists in preparing and dispensing compounded sterile products
Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of the Pharmacy Department.
Completes one department quality assurance/improvement project every six months
Ability to serve as a mentor and or "lead" on one of the advanced competency areas identified by the Pharmacy Department.
Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.
Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit which may include:
Birth – 28 days Neonate
1 – 18 Months Infant
18 Months – 3 Years Toddler
3 – 6 Years Preschool-aged
6 – 12 Years School-aged
12 – 18 Years Adolescents
18 – 65 Years Adults
65+ Years Geriatric
Hours/Schedule:
Full time
40 hours per week
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience as Pharmacy Tech and CPhT required
CPhT required. Registered with Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Excellent math and computer skills are required. Must demonstrate an ability to learn complicated processes and tasks and to apply learning to new situations. Must possess the ability to perform work accurately and with attention to detail within specified time periods. Must also have the ability to set priorities and to re-set priorities as needed by situations in the department. Problem solving skills are required for this position.
Good written and verbal communications skills are essential for this position as the individual will be a mentor for other members of the technician staff. Must assume the role as a mentor for one of the advanced competency areas listed in the pharmacy technician career ladder.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Must be able to operate all equipment that is essential to performing the job; Must have good coordination and manual dexterity and functional use of senses; Evidence of the necessary physical, mental and emotional health to effectively perform the job; Ability to handle stress related to emergency situations; Must possess the ability to perform work accurately and with attention to detail; Ability to wear protective clothing when exposed to hazardous/infectious materials
Work Environment: Fast paced clinical environment; Must be able to prioritize work for completion with interruptions; Must be able to handle problems requiring a rapid response.
Hazards: May prepare chemotherapy admixtures and work with toxic chemicals
