The Instructor Safety Training will teach informative course, covering all topics needed for the specialized safety course. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for teaching all topics of the specified course in preparation for certification as outlined by the governing organization.
Be identifiable as a Safety Training Instructor representative of the YMCA or other organization.
Use positive reinforcement and corrective techniques. Make accommodations for diverse learning levels.
Make eye contact with students and communicate in terms of students understanding. Asks students questions to monitor their understanding and provide students with feedback on their activities.
Work to improve the way the class works together in an atmosphere of respect and safety.
Maintain accurate course records and schedule. Communicates effectively with management about records and changes in schedules.
Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
Use teaching aids and equipment appropriately with activities.
Structure class time to complete lessons and activities within the scheduled period.
Work with Aquatics Director in scheduling course dates and ordering equipment needed for the course.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be 10-20 minutes early to class for set up. Record time worked correctly with limited mistakes.
Must have firm understanding of the material and can relate real life experiences for the topics covered.
Maintain accurate course records of each student’s progress and maintains contact information for all students.
Able to demonstrate skills needed for students to meet the course objectives.
Minimum age of 16.
Valid Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification .
Must be able to teach and perform current rescue techniques, First Aid and CPR/AED.
Strong vocal ability to project instruction clearly during lessons.
Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
Strong time management skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to pass the pre-skills test for the certifying organization.
Must be willing and able to teach in the water for each class. Must be able to enter and exit pool without assistance.
Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
