The Robotic Storage Technologies - Artificial Intelligence (RST-AI) team at Amazon Robotics is seeking a passionate, collaborative, hands-on Sr. Applied Scientist to help us take the intelligence of our automated solutions to the next level. As a thought leader on the team, you will invent and lead the development of machine learning capabilities enabling optimal decision making by solutions employing hundreds of mobile drive units. You will research and curate training strategies enabling solutions to continuously adapt to changes in operating conditions. You will influence best-in-class MLOps capabilities to ensure scalability across our word-wide network of sites.

The ideal candidate for this position will be familiar with learning algorithms at both the theoretical and implementation levels. You will have the chance to solve complex scientific problems and see your solutions come to life in Amazon’s warehouses!

Key job responsibilities

  • Research new ideas and drive the vision of our ML roadmap.

  • Design and develop scalable ML models trained on large data sets.

  • Work closely with software engineering teams to deploy your innovations.

  • Devise novel training and evaluation strategies to influence state-of-the-art MLOps capabilities.

  • Influence development of simulation and other forms of offline policy evolution.

  • Publish your work at major conferences/journals.

A day in the life

On a typical day in this role you will work to progress your research projects, meet with robotic storage engineering, systems, and solutions stakeholders, brainstorm with other scientists on the team, participate in team processes, and mentor junior scientists. You will follow your research projects though the entire life cycle of design, prototype implementation, evaluation, analysis, and will communicate your findings and results through technical papers and reports. You will collaborate with software development teams to implement your ideas in production software services and design experiments to pilot your algorithms and models in Amazon's robotic warehouses.

About the team

You would joining a team of scientists and software developers specializing in machine learning and simulation. We develop machine learning methods and apply them to real-word robotic warehouses. We maintain platforms enabling continuous monitoring and insights into performance for our entire robotic storage network. We provide simulation and other forms of mathematical modeling to enable evaluation and evolution of new ideas.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience

  • PhD, or Master's degree and 6+ years of applied research experience

  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

  • Experience with neural deep learning methods and machine learning

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc.

  • Experience with large scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark etc.
