Summary

The Vice President of Corporate Communications will serve as a key leader at NYPA, driving strategic and tactical direction within the Corporate Communications department and actively coordinate with the rest of the organization. The role demands a forward-thinking leader capable of directing the responsibilities of the communications team and overseeing the development and implementation of external and internal communications strategies. This person will lead five departments: media relations, internal communications, media, graphics and video. This position reports to the SVP, Communications and External Affairs and is responsible for aligning communication strategies with NYPA’s mission, business goals, and values.

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction of the communications department, ensuring the execution aligns with the organization’s Strategic Plan.

  • Oversee the collaboration with business units to develop and refine communication strategies that support and advance organizational objectives.

  • Direct the development of communication plans to ensure that each department’s communication needs are effectively met.

  • Oversee the impact of the organization’s communication strategy and direct internal and external stakeholders in response to or anticipation of changing market conditions.

  • Oversee the design, execution, and evaluation of marketing and communications initiatives that will enhance the organization’s reputation.

  • Lead coordination efforts with the Executive Office to ensure messaging and communication strategies effectively convey the organization’s policy positions.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Office and the Executive Chamber on press releases and messaging.

  • Supervise the evaluation and enhancement of service delivery methods, ensuring communication programs are assessed for effectiveness and strategic fit.

  • Direct the transformation of data, marketing insights, staff and business-related information into clear and compelling stories that reframe challenges and offer new opportunities, points of view and strategic solutions.

  • Develop social media campaigns that reflect the viewing habits of major stakeholders, key communities, and new demographics.

  • Convey a continuing thoughtful response to the challenges and evolution of the utility industry and clean energy transition.

  • Ensure that internal and external communication opportunities to share NYPA’s story are being proactively identified and executed by supporting a culture of creative thinking and problem solving.

  • Maintain oversight of communication protocols, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and clarity of messaging across all platforms and departments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strategic thinker with extensive experience in the development and execution of long-term organizational plans.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide thought leadership on complex business issues, fostering an environment of excellence and strategic foresight.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability in guiding and executing business initiatives, utilizing a comprehensive background in data analysis to inform strategy development and enhance communication within the company.

  • Skilled in fostering an environment that encourages team development and collaboration, bringing out the best in each professional while driving system-wide marketing and communications efforts that align with executive expectations and company-wide goals.

  • Combines excellent judgement and discretion with a demonstrated ability to swiftly adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Well-versed in managing marketing principles, brand management, and developing action plans to improve communication goals.

  • Ability to support strategic change in a continuously evolving business landscape, with a track record of establishing performance metrics and analysis frameworks that drive transparency and organizational accountability at the highest levels.

  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to lead and execute business initiatives and provide tactical planning.

  • Demonstrated ability to change tactics and strategies as communications platforms and habits change.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree; Communications, Business, Marketing, or a relevant field.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a leadership role within a corporate communications team or a related area.

  • Experience in Government/Public Sector preferred (NY State preferred)

  • Utility or energy experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $184,360 - $225,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
