New Hanover County Government Shelter Attendant/Veterinary Assistant in Wilmington, North Carolina

Position Information

:

The New Hanover County Sheriff's office is seeking a Shelter Attendant/Veterinary Assistant responsible for providing care for shelter animals, maintaining the County animal shelter, and assisting with pre- and post-operative surgical procedures. Duties will include daily care of animals to include feeding, bathing, medicating, and cleaning up after animals; daily cleaning of the shelter; assisting with pre- and post-operative surgical procedures to include clipping the prep area, intubating and extubating the animals, cleaning surgical packs, dispensing medication, removing sutures, and autoclaving surgical instruments; performing and assisting with the physicals, vaccinations, and euthanasia of shelter animals and with the preparation of animal carcasses for disposal; assisting with the redemption, impounding, and adoption of shelter animals to include picking up traps, assigning housing to incoming animals, and assisting with the advertising of animals available for adoption; assisting office and officer personnel by answering telephones and dispatching calls to officers; helping to maintain an inventory of animal food, cleaning and office supplies, medicines, various chemicals, and other shelter supplies and enters and updates animal information into the computer system. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is the principal law enforcement agency of New Hanover County, providing service to over 200,000 people within 185 square miles. The Sheriff's Office patrols the county, investigates crimes, apprehends criminals, and provides custody or control for arrested defendants, both pre-trial and sentenced. The Sheriff is responsible for courtroom security, service of civil process, transportation of prisoners and mental patients, and service of criminal papers. Qualifications

: High school diploma/GED and one year of veterinary assistant experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
