Description
Position Type: Full-Time
Job Location: Arkansas City & Winfield
Under the direction of the Health Department Administrator, the Environmental Health Technician will
perform inspections and investigations in the field of Environmental Health and manage of the
countywide wastewater inspection, permitting and design process. A series of Kansas based education
courses will be required to be successfully completed within a defined period after hire date.
Job Characteristics:
This position requires a scientific background in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or similar
closely related field. Must have professional manner and exceptional attention to detail. Strong oral and
written communication skills; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships at all
organizational levels and with the public; ability to work independently and make sound and reasonable
judgments when working in the field and the ability to quickly learn new skills are high desirable.
Example of Duties
Performs inspections on septic systems and water wells.
Perform soil analysis for private wastewater systems.
Perform water sampling from private wells.
Perform required laboratory tests.
Assist property owners and contractors with correct wastewater system design.
Assist property owners in the remediation of illegal waste disposal sites.
Assists in grant writing activities.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
Windows operating system; GIS and GPS software applications; modern office methods and practices
including common software applications; business English, including vocabulary, correct grammatical
usage and punctuation; modem filing methods; common office machines and their operation, including
use of personal computers.
Ability to:
Work under general supervision; complete tasks and assignments with deadlines; work independently;
assist in the developing and implementing of goals, objectives, work sites, policies, procedures, and
work standards; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the
course of work.
Education, Training, and Experience:
Environmental Health Technician
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma and preferred two-years of college with a concentration in
Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry or other closely related job experience in the environmental
health field.
Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid Kansas driver\'s license issued by the State Department of Revenue Division of
Motor Vehicles, and a clean driving record.
